Anybody know about the background for this Panther? Thanx! The picture is being sold in the Finnish net auction.
I could be way off-beam with this, Kai, but there was a famous incident in August 1944 as Leclerc's troops entered Paris ; a Free French A/T gunner fired from the Arc de Triomphe and disabled a Panther 1800 metres away in the Champs Elysees. I wonder if this may be the tank, or a similar one from the same unit ?
I found this about an M-10 named Sirocco, crewed by French sailors knocking out a Panther in Paris. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M10_Wolverine
Thanx for the tips, Martin and Ta! Anyone else, maybe seen this kinda pic somewhere? BTW, just got it for 3€. Nice souvenir!
http://community.webshots.com/album/252214650KdqwaH Found that after a quick google search (Kai, are you slipping? ) I don't recall where I read this, but I'm pretty sure my memory is correct- the panther in Kai's image and the one in the images in above link was a Panther captured by Free French forces and in turn used against it's former owners. I don't recall any of the details, and my quick google search (busy today) didn't turn up any immediate details. But if that info IS correct- then Kai, that is in fact quite the interesting and unique photo to find on auction!
Thanx CrazyD! Gotta find data on the Free France Panthers somewhere. Unfortunately the turret numbers are gone...
Yeah, I wish I remembered where I read about it. I'll check sources tonight. I'm pretty sure that wherever I'm recalling the info from had more than just "captured Panthers used by the Free French"- probably had some dates/areas of operation, maybe units, etc. I'll see if I can find anything tonight.
