The Panzer IIIA had a different suspension than later marks. Does anyone know why it was changed? Thank you in advance.

My guess is that different systems were tried out, only the E submodel got the final suspension.

Correct. The Panzer III Ausf.A road wheels used a coil spring suspension. The B,C and D models all had different leaf spring designs. These were not found to be satisfactory. All variants afterword beginning with the Ausf.E had torsion bar suspension.
