Book Forum: Patrick K. O’DonnellThe Brenner Assignment: The Untold Story of the Most Daring Spy Mission of World War II The Brenner Assignment reveals, for the first time, the facts behind the most daring covert operation of World War II. Since Roman times, the Brenner Pass had been an essential trade and military route through the Alps. When the war broke out in Europe, it became a major supply artery for the Third Reich, as well as a symbol of the Hitler/Mussolini “Pact of Steel.” Military historian Patrick K. O’Donnell has drawn on thousands of recently declassified files, private documents, and personal interviews to write the never-before-told account of a handful of brave men who were dropped intoenemy territory with orders to cut off access to the Brenner Pass by any means necessary.

Patrick K. O’Donnell is the author of We Were One: Shoulder to Shoulder with the Marines Who Took Fallujah. His previous WWII books include the Colby Award-winning Beyond Valor (about the American Ranger and Airborne troops); Into the Rising Sun (stories of the veterans of the Pacific arena); and Operatives, Spies, and Saboteurs (on the men and women of the OSS). His most recent book is They Dared Return: The Untold Story of Jewish Spies behind the Lines in Nazi Germany. He lives in Arlington, Virginia.
