I am named after Fred Sutherland of the Dambusters Still doing fine. Last time I talked to him he had just come home from a hike in the Rocky Mountains near his home in Rocky Mountain House Alberta Canada. He appears in many of History Channel's TV Series The Legendary Lancaster - Flightpath - History Television Bomber Command TV episodes, but loses much sleep ever after each time. The memories just destroy him. It was considered a suicide squadron, but Britain badly needed their version of the morale boosting Doolittle Raid, and they answered the call. To set the mood re the next few posts... a British World War II, very for real, "News" Film clip played in Movie Theaters: I would suggest you start in the middle with "Target for Tonight" 3 of 5 Watch: YouTube - (03) World War II British: "Target for Tonight" 3 of 5 - see below for the other 4 episodes that precede and follow this. Another neighbour, Joe Merchant was in the later Dambusters and asked me to visit his 617 Squadron Wing Commander and carry his thanks to him on one of my flying holidays in OZ. He had retired near Lismore / Bexhill, in NE NSW Australia. So I spent a heartrending day with him in 1992. He said that when he was promoted to Wing Commander, the only reason (he said) was that he was the oldest living pilot, at 23 years of age, at the time in 617. :flag_oz: :S! He said he still received a steady stream of letters and phone calls from old crew members, and would politely reminise but in fact could not remember a single name or face. In the war, all crewmen were referred to by the last three digits of their enlistment number only - never, ever by name. He said this was an absolute pre-requisite for emotional survival - the losses were that high with their (and 9 Sqdn's) precision bombing. Oh... that hurts A Thousand Shall Fall: The True ... - Google Books A Thousand Shall Fall by Murray Peden from Winnipeg Manitoba is perhaps the best Bomber Command book ever written. "I consider it not only the best and most true to life 'war' book I've read about this war, but the best about all the wars of my lifetime." - Marshall of the Royal Air Force, Sir Arthur Harris - - - - - - - - - - - - - I also purchased a copy of "The Nuremburg Raid" by Martin Middlebrook. I had heard good reviews about it but when I opened the book to read on the cover that he was a chicken and pig farmer in England, I thought "Oh dear, this is not good." Big, big mistake. Probably the most well written, most thorough and well researched book on the war I have read. I am now committed and dedicated to read everything he has published. I lost a lot of relatives and family friends in Bomber Command in WW2 460 Squadron RAAF 460 SQUADRON RAAF was stationed at Binbrook. This just tears your heart out: "The most sorties The highest tonnage The heaviest casualties The most decorations of any Squadron in Bomber Command" Watch: YouTube - (01) World War II British: "Target for Tonight" 1 of 5 Watch: YouTube - (02) World War II British: "Target for Tonight" 2 of 5 Watch: YouTube - (04) World War II British: "Target for Tonight" 4 of 5 Watch: YouTube - (05) World War II British: "Target for Tonight" 5 of 5

Almost as far off topic as you can get, and yet still be on task... - But very good quality and very, very good and enjoyable performances: I just got back from Oz. While sliding through Sydney I joined a diverse group of NATO chaps that, needing some serious stress relief, thoroughly enjoyed (as did I) a performance by Cabin Crew, a Techo Beat / Galaxy type Dance Music duo from Sydney, Australia. Damn good video and music. You'll watch this one over and over until they lock you out. Really, I mean it.
