My Grandfather was a photographer during the war and I have recently been given several photos that I would like to know more about. I was directed to this site from a member on my forum (Long Island Firearms) and was hoping to get some help.

I have a beautiful shot of some Boeing B29s flying over Mt Fuji and a few others. Most of the subjects of the photos are my grandfather and friends.

I don't really know much about his service or where exactly he was stationed. Any help or direction would be great. I tried searching the National Archives but came up empty. I do not have the pictures scanned yet but will soon.

    Thanks in advance.

    Dauntless Dotty

B-29 Bombers Operating From Saipan And Tinian in World War II; World War II Virtual Museum, American Memorial Park, Saipan

    Robert Morgan, B-29, Dauntless Dotty

The pilot of the Dauntless Dotty was Robert Morgan, pilot of the Memphis Belle.

I can't see the aircraft well enough in the formation pictures to determine what bomb group they are.

The flag raising picture is Joe Rosenthal's well known photo of the second flag raising on Iwo Jima.

The sixth man from the right in the photo of Dauntless Dotty is the pilot, Colonel Robert Morgan. I think that this photo may have been taken following their return to Saipan from the first Tokyo raid since the Doolittle Raid. If so, the fifth man from the left may be General Emmett O'Donnell.

The B-29 pictures with the "T Square" on the tail belong to the 873rd Squadron, 874th Squadron, and the 875 Squadron of the 498th Bombardment Group(Very Heavy).

T Code, Serial #, and Plane nicknames(if any) can be found here:
    http://b-29.org/73BW/bomb-wing-data/498-group.html

The shot of B-29sover mount Fuji, I have seen before, apparently it is quite popular.

Another website on the 498th Bomb Group, specifically the 874th Squadron.

You can also try the forums over at armyairforces.com, specifically:

What a dunce I am, I forgot to add:
