Until the death of Franco, no parties were allowed.
After that (1975), all parties started to form or reappear after being years underground.
After the "Transicion", or transition government (right wing/center), the "left" won (PSOE, "socialists").
Then in 1982, the world soccer championship was in Spain. :D

You have to take into account that political parties in Spain are not exactly what they say they are. The "left" and "right" parties tend closer to a "center" idea (besides both extreme wings).
Our politicians worry more about what the other side does wrong than of doing something right themselves.

Sorry for so short an answer, but right now i don't have time for more. And you can't learn our political past from an spanish, because nobody seems impartial (maybe I am, because i hate all of them ;) ).

    Best hispanist are British :D

most right wing and left wing parties tend to be similar in most ways , and go towards a central belief. For a small country like canada thereb are 5 or 6 parties , so i don't pay close attention anymore.

    I was about to ask...

The Netherlands on the other hand does still have many different parties with truly varying party programs, even though population-wise it's smaller than Canada. This might have to do with the country's age, too.

Well, the parties that are more diferent, tend to be a bit extremists... or complete loons.
Independentists of the several "historical communities" are difficult to classify, maybe both things at the same time. :D
