I, for one, have never seen these before. They help to bring the horror of war home. Thanks for posting the link.

A couple of the photos look familiar (in particular the Wingen-sur-Moder photo #P12), but most I don't recall seeing before. Thanks for post the link, Rick.

It's strange... the pictures of dead soldiers don't get to me quite as much as the dead horses.

Quite a few of these photos are in NARA's collection of US Army Signal Corps collection.

    Skipper,

More about Wingen sur Moder here. I was going to mention last night that this town looks like the Hagenau scenes in Band of Brothers.

That is correct, Wingen is indeed in Alsace and the scenery is very similar, same climate, same landscape etc. The church is a catholic one. The town was attacked because snipers were supposedly hidden there. I haven't checked whether this appeared to be true or not. Wingen had been annexed to Germany until it was liberated.

The description sounds like this was a terribly tough fire fight and the evidence of the church and town destruction prove that. Trying to deal with the trench foot and frostbite during battle must be abject misery and torment.

Some of my Dad's relatives farmed and worked stone in Alsace on their way to PA and OH. They left after the Napoleonic Wars only to arrive in the US in time for the Civil War.

really great pics...much thanks ....the humans killing, and as we can see, destroying people's lives by destroying the towns...

great pics, but I've always wanted to do a staged-photo thread .... look at this pic..caption says they are ''mvoing under heavy fire'', but the medical man to the right, doesn't seem to be worried??

It is really a surprize when a lot of photos show up and the majority appear to have not been seen by most of us. I imagine there are still many sitting in boxes stored away . These seen to be very candid, have a personal, gruesome quality to some. I an reminded of the photos in Normandy of the draught horses and cattle .

Thanks Rick, a great contribution and the site has some interesting links to run down as well.
