    Hi
I wonder if anyone can help a friend of mine - a D-Day veteran - with a query. My friend was in 41 Commando and landed on Sword beach.
He was told a few years ago that he might feature in this rather famous photo.
He was wounded shortly after arriving on Sword when a shell hit a knocked-out tank.
My friend believes this photo might show him in the distance crossing from the centre to the tank on the left of the photo. He was sheltering behind the tank when it was hit.
He is adamant he landed in front of the fortified hotel you can see in the background.
However, I've seen captions for this photo claiming it shows Piper Millin and Lord Lovat's men. My friend was further along the beach from them so if that's true it can't be him.
    Thanks in advance
    Greg

This is one of the photographs - supposedly - taken by Captain Leslie Evans aboard Brigadier Lord Lovat's LCI(S)519 on D-Day. The distinctive building is the three-story Maison de la Mer on Sword Beach and After The Battle identified the figure in the right of the photo as being Bill Millin, and the officer just to the left of 'Millins' left arm as possibly being Lovat himself.

The photo sequence is extensively discussed in 'D-Day Then & Now : Volume II'.

Thanks Martin. It's pretty much as I expected then: my friend's been misinformed.
I think he'll be very disappointed if I told him. Will have to think about it.
