CUMBERLAND, Md. - Raymond J. McCabe, 84, of Cumberland, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, Jan. 28, 2009, at his residence after a courageous battle with cancer.


Born March 15, 1924, on top of Green Ridge, he was the son of the late Michael E. and Effie (Hartman) McCabe.


He was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Reta (Hiett) McCabe; and nine of his siblings, Arlie Ray Byrd, Edna McCabe, Mollie Robinett, Pat McCabe, Arveda Piper, Elva Slider, Michael McCabe, Roy McCabe and Viola (Sissy) Jessen.


A veteran of the U.S. Army, Company A 97"' Signal Battalion, Raymond fought in the Battle of the Bulge and loved to reminisce about his days in Germany and to tell stories of World War II. A retired supervisor for AT&T, he began his telephone career as a lineman with Bell Telephone and viewed the world from many tall poles in Allegany and Garrett counties before moving to Hagerstown in 1958. He was a member and officer in the Telephone Pioneers' organization. An avid hunter, he loved the time he spent in the mountains of Pendelton County, W.Va. He also enjoyed hunting for wild mushrooms with his wife, Reta.


A founding charter member of Winifred Road Church of Christ, he served for many years as a deacon of the church. He also volunteered numerous hours at Tri-State Christian Service Camp in Strasburg, Va.


Surviving are his sister-in-law and caretaker in his later months, Nola McCabe of Cumberland; his sister, Effie Slider of Annapolis; his brother, George McCabe and wife, Angela, of Rome, N.Y.; and his aunt, Arveda Pritt of Keyser, W.Va. He also is survived by more than 35 nieces and nephews. Although he and Reta had no children of their own, they treated their nieces and nephews as if they were theirs.


The family wishes to thank the many church family and friends who have supported us through this lengthy illness and the compassionate staff of WMHS Home Hospice for their kind and loving care and assistance in Raymond's final days in this life.


Friends will be received Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at Scarpelli Funeral Home P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., Cumberland

Funeral services will be Monday, Feb. 2, 2009, at 10 a.m. at the funeral home with John R. Herbst officiating.


Interment will be in the Maryland State Veterans Cemetery at Rocky Gap, Flintstone.


Military honors will be accorded by Post 13 Honor Guard.
