    Hi Folks,

Im wondering if anyone can point me in the right track of obtaining any information on a Flight Officer Glenn Robert Young or Bob as he was known, an American, that enlisted in the RCAF on the 9th Oct 1941 -recieving his Pilot rating on the 25th Sept 1942 and his instrument rating on the 14th July 1943, flying 20 missions and then transferring to the USAAF, his family have no information on his RCAF service in England apart from the small ammount of info such as his enlistment date and a photograph of him in front of a Hudson aircraft at RAF Bircham Newton (Back centre in black" "pic attached", ive pretty much tracked down his later history in the USAAF where sadly he was killed in 45, but would appreciate any info on his RCAF carreer.

    many thanks

    Will

For some information on Bircham Newton try the RAF Bircham Newton Memorial Project. While FO Young joined the RCAF it is possible his service was with an RAF squadron as a member of the RCAF.

Try writing for his military record with RCAF. It helps if you know his service number in the RCAF, but you may be able to get assistance or his record without it. Scroll down to post 6 http://www.ww2f.com/military-servic...esting-copies-military-personnel-records.html regarding how to order military service records from the National Archives of Canada.

Also see http://www.ww2f.com/battle-europe/22721-how-us-pilots-joined-raf.html for information regarding American Pilots joined the RCAF/RAF.

    Good Luck!

This is not unheard of. Many Americans joined the RCAF and then when the US entered the war transferred to the USAAC.

This is your Glenn Young, I believe:

    Glenn R. Young

First Lieutenant, U.S. Army Air Forces

    Service # O-886034

    3rd Air Base Depot

    Entered the Service from: Kentucky
    Died: 19-Jun-45
Buried at: Plot D Row 4 Grave 16
    Cambridge American Cemetery
    Cambridge, England
Awards: Silver Star, Air Medal with 11 Oak Leaf Clusters, Purple Heart
Now, in order to get his RCAF service record you will have to prove to the Library and Archives Canada (holders of his RCAF service record) that he is dead. As he was not in the RCAF when he died they will have no record of him dying.

They will allow you access to his service file but you must supply them with proof of death.

The information I posted above comes from the American Battle Monuments Commission website:

    http://www.abmc.gov

The way this site is set up I cannot provide you a link which goes directly to his name. In the "search" option enter his name as "Young Glenn" (without quotations) and once you reach the page print off a copy of it.

The Library and Archuives Canada in Ottawa will accept this as proof of death and will allow you access to his file.

Currently there is a four month wait for this type of information as they have a huge backlog but they will mail you 25 pages of extracts from his file, free of charge.
