    Hi,

A friend of mine found this Kriegsmarine Flag in a ship and paid £20 for it, the owner who sold it to him had no idea if it was real or not. We’ve seen these all selling (Genuine ones) for about £500. From theses pictures is there anyway to tell if this is real?

    Thanks!

..I'm no expert, but we need closer pictures....I have authentic armbands and pennants...the armbands are made of 3 pieces sewn together.....the stitching is very well done on my stuff.....

More pictures would definitely be helpful. The flag looks in pristine condition and something about the the lanyard loop that looks unusual. I have a Kriegsmarine Battle Flag that was “liberated” and signed by the soldiers that I will post some pictures to compare. I am also by no means an expert but I think between some more pictures and some more input by other members you will get a solid answer

Late in the day I know but this flag is a reproduction, what is wrong with it.
The size and all the markings are bogus, it is named to a light cruiser - this would almost certainly never happen, the folks making the flag would have no idea where it was going and why would a ship mark its own flags.
Proportions are wrong the swastika is in the centre and again the proportions of the black cross are crude and too large, the hoist is also wrong there should be an impressed ribbed pattern - it is missing, the rope loop is bright white - modern rope it is also not sewn incorrectly and there are no reinforced corners, also no sewing reinforcing top, bottom and at the fly end.
When one proportion is out it throws the rest out as well.
Attached photos will illustrate what you should see and find, same follows through on all sizes of flags, the sizes which are period are shown below.

    12, 450x750cm, over 10K, Battleship (Bismarck 50K)
    11, 400x670cm, over 10K tons, B-Cruiser (Prinz Eugen 14K)
    10, 300x500cm, 1500 to 10K tons, Cruiser (Leipzig 8.4K tons)
    8, 200x335cm, 1500 to 10K tons, Destroyer 3K & Cruiser 8K
    7, 150x250cm, 500 to 1500 tons,
    6, 100x170cm, 500 to 1500 tons, DE-Torpedo Boat 900 tons
    5, 80x135cm, up to 500 tons, U-Boats and E-Boats, tugs
    3, 50x85cm, up to 500 tons, U-Boats 900, E-Boats 120t IMG_1670.JPG IMG_1661.JPG IMG_1662.JPG IMG_1663.JPG IMG_1664.JPG IMG_1669.JPG 001.JPG IMG_2013.JPG IMG_2009.JPG IMG_2016.JPG
