    Hello all.

Curious of whether anyone has any information about Camp Wheeler in Macon Georgia. My grandfather was there between March and September 1944 before he was shipped out to the ETO. I understand that the camp was an infantry replacement camp rather than a home to specific units (with the exception of the 7th Infantry Division). My grandfather was in the 23rd Infantry Regiment, 2nd Infantry Division.

I am looking to see where I may find some information about the camp, i.e. did they keep records of who came through there, are there photographs stored somewhere, etc. I am dying to find a photo of my grandfather at the camp but that seems like a longshot.

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks.

Try the book "The History of Camp Wheeler, Georgia, Infantry for Two Wars",
by Frank M. McKinney, Wolfe Publishing, P.O. 8036, Fernandina Beach, Fl. 32025,
    1-800-475-6782

I see one on e-bay for $60.00, a bit pricey, Bookfinder.com does not list it.
    It has been available from:
    Frank M. McKinney
    302 Oldham Bldg.
    Macon, Ga. 31201

    for $22.00 + $3.50 shipping but
Judge McKinney passed away a couple of years ago, and
it may no longer be available from this source.

There is a copy in the Middle Georgia Regional Library, Washington Memorial
Library, Macon, Ga. - perhaps you could get your local library to borrow it through
    the interlibrary loan program.

It is a very good and concise history of the camp in both wars, but a photo of
your ancestor would indeed be a long shot.

The Genealogy Department of the Washington Memorial Library has an extensive file on the camp,
but you would have to visit Macon to access it.
