I noticed there's been some interest on here recently about German helmets, so I thought I'd post a picture of mine.... Actually, it's been up in the attic for a long time - I literally had to blow the dust off it. It's one of my very first pieces of WWII militaria bought on my first solo trip to the Ardennes ( which I'm horrified to realise was 21 years ago ! ). I stopped at a shop in Bastogne which had a load of stuff for sale, including a box of 'rust' brought in by a local farmer who had been clearing land. Amongst it was this relic helmet..... I think I paid the equivalent of about £15 for it....it's obviously very 'relic' ; I cleaned off most of the rust ; the rivets were just unsightly rusty blobs which I drilled out and replaced with repro items bought at the Beltring fair. Of course, I wish I could go back in time and buy everything in the shop but I'm older, wiser, and have a little more spare cash now ! It still has the size marking and the interior band - I'm happy with it because the famous shape is still 'all there' and once again - it's a relic of 1944.....
Another fantastic item, Martin. Can the manufacturer code and size stamp still be seen on the inner rim ?
The size stamp can just be made out and seems to be '60' - sadly, some vestiges of the manufacturer stamp can only just be seen under strong magnification but the rust has made them illegible.....
Nice helmet, Martin! I had a friend at school once who brought a WWI helmet to class with a bullet hole in it. Chilling! Another friend of mine has a reproduction German helmet.
my auntie dolly uses her helmets for hanging baskets.she got hers from jersey,a few years ago.there are lots available there,apparently.lee.
Can you post some photos of your 'auntie dolly's' hanging baskets, I would be interested in seeing them?
i will try,but i must say i only just figured out how digital cameras work;hence the photo in my members thing.anyway, like i say,i will try.but no promises.yours,lee..
I saw one in not much better condition last week in a flea market in France and they wanted 120 euros for it.
