Humphrey was not alone in the dark that night; bullets from a fortified concrete “pillbox” kept Humphrey’s comrades pinned to the hill on which he was killed until the following morning.
Then, in the face of continued enemy fire, Sgt. Frank Cleland and fellow Marines hastily buried their buddy, just as he was, in a wooded area a few yards behind their lines.
There, Humphrey stayed until September 2009, despite earlier efforts by the U.S. government and his family to find him.
“They found George last fall; someone was out with a metal detector, I guess,” said Richter’s sister, Helen Neitzel, of Horicon, Wis.
“French nationals hunting war artifacts believed they (had) found remains of an American soldier,” Greer said.
