Way behind the front lines in central France, the AEF had an enormous logistics base which dispatched freshly arrived Americans to the front . They started with nothing in 1917, using borrowed French and British material but soon came with their own modern supplies in huge quantities. When they left in 1919 the barracks were sold to French civilians and the material was taken by farmers and souvneir hunters. When they arrived and had no place in the barracks, they were slept in tents and were billeted in civilian homes. Nowadays their presence is remembered in a museum, or engravings on old walls and a French teacher has published the following work which can be seen here : The American Camps in Givres: 1917-1919 - Home May they always be remembered .
