Wonder if anyone has read or knows more about this escape route and how long it did to get back.

I read something on him years ago but I cant remember what? All I know is that he was one of few who made the attempt and actually made it. I remember a story a German vet told me (when I was in Germany) that he was in the "rescue" unit - part of the attempt to break to Stalingrad and help extricate the 6th Army. This vet told me that after they broke off the rescue operation that his unit (I dont recall which he was in?) was one of the rearguard units and one early dark morning, he heard gunfire somewhere to his front and it turned out that some sentries on duty shot and killed a man trying to sneak up to their lines-the man turned out of be a German Stalingrad escapee.
