Just downloaded from ITunes a song I used to listen to years ago, "Roads to Moscow", by Al Stewart. A hauntingly beautiful rock and roll song about a Russian fighting in WWII. I hadn't heard it in 30 years until tonight. Anyone else familiar with it? If not you ought to check it out. BTW, I have really been enjoying the forums here. You guys do a good job.
CY; Best song of 1973; YouTube - Al Stewart - Roads To Moscow And a version with animations; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NrgWP7K-Gok JeffinMNUSA
CY; "The Gulag Archipelego" was also released in the West in 1973 and it had a huge effect; The Gulag Archipelago - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia JeffinMNUSA
I remember that song but it has been years since I heard it. Anouther song similar to it is The Partisan Song by Leonard Cohen. The best version was on Austin City Limits but here is a link you can hear the studio version. Leonard Cohen – The Partisan – Listen free and discover music at Last.fm
Hi; Here's a Partisan song by Lydia Ruslanova; YouTube - Partizan And here's a wartime favorite from Russia; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F3bksG5iXOk And it has been mentioned that the Russians had one fantastic arsenal of Music. Then there was the Leningrad symphony by Shostakovich; written and performed during the siege; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1mx5B-UVQsw I recently read Mike Jones "Leningrad" and it really adds depth if you play this while reading the book (Mike is working on a Battle of Moscow book just now). There is a seige era account in Jones about a German soldier who tuned his radio into the premiere of the Leningrad symphony and suddenly just knew that they were never going to take the city. JeffinMNUSA PS. Mike is currently working on a Battle of Moscow book; Here is some music to set the tone Mike! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zSQHtD8DZSM&feature=related And of course "Holy War" ; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PzdG21cVJRY&feature=related The rage and determination expressed in this song is real-and genuinely felt by the general Soviet population.
Just saw this thread, Al Stewart's "Past, Present & Future" is an all-time favorite album of mine. It also has a song called 'The Last Day of June, 1934', about the Night of the Long Knives.
