McDade commanded 2/7th Cavalry at Ia Drang in 1965 but had seen a lot of action before this. He served in the Pacific in WW2 as a rifle platoon commander and then commanded Company I, 3/9th IR, 2 ID in Korea where won two silver stars in 1951. Can anyone tell me which unit her served with in WW2? He enlisted in New Yrok in 1942 so assume he went through OCS before joining his regiment in 1943 or 1944. Given that he only reached Colonel by the time he retired in 1975 I am assuming he was not a West Point Graduate.
