Very, very sad indeed to hear that Robert Vaughn passed away this morning at the age of 83. There goes a part of my youth - absolutely everyone of my generation remembers Napoleon Solo in The Man From U.N.C.L.E. But I also especially enjoyed his performances as the doomed German officer in The Bridge At Remagen and the shady Senator in Bullitt ; - 'I'll be back in the morning with...my people'. R.I.P to a fine actor.
I liked his line in The Bridge at Remagen: "The Army helped bring Hitler into power. Are you saying we made a mistake?" Not like any German officer would have really said that.
Vaughn was also in The Magnificent Seven, as well as two Columbo episodes (I'm a bit of a Columbo fan).
Sad news indeed. Although he wasn't a standout actor there was just something about him that made me really enjoy him. For those in a slightly younger generation, you may remember him as General Hunt Stockwell during the last season of the A-Team. As did I. Not a good movie overall, but I really enjoyed Vaughn in it. Vaughn carried the film -- George Segal and Ben Gazzara's scenes fell flat.
U.N.C.L.E. will never be the same. Glad we still have Illya Kuryakin on NCIS. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Illya_Kuryakin
The classic Columbo had so many great guests villains on the show. He was never a 'academy' award type actor, but was always watchable.
Didn't Colombo start off on the series with McCloud and McMillan and Wife. Almost forgot Hec Ramsey (Richard Boone) had to look him up. Loved watching McQueen give Vaughan's slimey character, Chalmers, tons of back talk in "Bullitt".
Yes, the NBC Mystery Movie which rotated weekly between the shows. I had completely forgotten about Hec Ramsey, so you're memory is much better than mine.
One of the suave gentlemen I admired. A great loss. Loved him in each of his roles even if the flick was bad. Take Battle Beyond the Stars. An extended Magnificent Seven role. I ordered The Man From U.N.C.L.E. DVD series from Netflix and will have a marathon. RIP Mr Vaughn.
