Sorry, being relatively new in this forum I don't really know where to put this in which forum, feel free to move it to the correct place if you want

I am in need of help regarding a historical japanese destroyer in WW2, Which if my memory helps my well was an old, obsolete class (kamikaze or minakaze probably) but I could be wrong

being an extensive pacific-war reader in the past, I stumbled upon a read in a wikipedia article (I remember well it was an article about a battle) where one japanese destroyer helped rescue alot of allied survivors despite extreme risk, I red this 2 to 3 years ago and I am trying to re-find thsi destroyer, so far my searches have gained nothing, if anyone can recognise this destroyer, All I can remember is that it reportedly was extremely over-filled with survivors after the rescue tour, and the event occured at night, after a fierce naval engagement, and on a great risk, and again, if memory servers correct, by an old class of destroyer

any help is appreciated in finding out the name of this destroyer, I will continue my search in the meantime and will update this thread once I find this particular ship

The only account I can think of concerns an event where two US wolfpacks attack a small Japanese convoy, two ships of which were "Hell Ships" carrying POW's, sinking both. At first no PoW's were picked up, but eventually the Guard commander talks the Escort captain into picking them up as they are "valuable" laborers and the Guard commander is responsible for his 'charges'.

The escort ship would have been an older second class ship, but I have no name for it I'm afraid.

    Good luck with your search.

It sounds similar to the end of the Second Battle of the Java Sea, when the HMS Exeter, HMS Encounter, and USS Pope were sunk. There were two sister ships of the Akatsuki class, IJN Ikazuchi and IJN Inazuma, that, between them, rescued almost 1,000 survivors from the sunken Allied ships. The IJN Ikazuchi is reported to have rescued 477 survivors from HMS Encounter and USS Pope, while the IJN Inazuma is reported to have rescued 527 survivors(two loads of 376 and 151) from all three ships.

We had a short discussion on this several years ago on AHF.
