Security for Overlord was kept as tight as possible, but there were a few scares. A British staff officer doing the Daily Telegraph crossword on 2 May noticed 17 across: 'One of the U.S.'; answer, 'Utah'. During the next six weeks, 'Omaha', 'Overlord', 'Mulberry', and 'Neptune' appeared as answers to clues. On 1st June MI5 detained the compiler, Leatherhead schoolmaster Leonard Dawe. After interrogation, Dawe was released and the whole affair put down as a coincidence.

The truth was revealed 40 years later. The schoolmaster used to get his pupils to fill out the blank crosswords and then concocted clues to fit. These pupils spent some of their afternoons at US and Canadian camps nearby where they heard the soldiers using the code words. These simply came to mind when they were filling out the crossword blanks in the classroom.
