I just started playing this game, I have the basics down such as moving around, speed, torpedos, deck guns, avoidance and setting your course. But I have some questions!

    1. How do I deal with starting in Keil and getting all the way to the Biscay region! It takes so long!

    2. What do I do when I run out of torpedos

    3. Does 24 hours actually mean 24 hours

    4. What are some good ways of getting away from DDs that are right over your head

    5. What are some general strategies for hunting down your enemies

I cant help with the time question and what not since I have SH 4, but in that to avoid Destroyers over head just as you hear or sense the charges in the water I go deep at full throttle weaving in random intervals, and when you think you are far enough away from the explosion hard steer the boat the opposite direction from which you were going and go silent, (which turns off the diesel engines making you quieter in the water.) and hope they don't pick you up again.

This is going to be tricky as I must assume your only playing Stock SH3...OK I've give it a bash.

!. Try the time compression to speed up the game.

    2. Return to any base...remember only your home base will you be able to pick up other updates and crew. In GWX you got supply ships and Milk Cows better known as supply U-Boats on station.

    3. I assume when you go to your patrol grid...ansewer is yes if you want your renown points. GWX has dumped the renown points.

    4. CRAP YOUR PANTS! or dive at flank speed in a straight line...deeper you go the better.

    5. Target the medium to big cargo ships and oil ships...they should be at the top of your list. Enemy Battleships & Aircraft carriers are worth a crack at only if you can get in to position and wait for them...Early war only.

    1. Your patrol area changes with every patrol. You don't have to get to your patrol area if you don't want. Sinking enemy tonnage is whats key. if you want to patrol your designated grid use the plus and minus keys on the number pad to speed up time. When your are viewing your map it will allow you to go to 1000+ real time. Just make sure you don't press enter or you will launch one of your fish. Once France falls your home port should move to a port in France.

    2. When your out of fish, press esc, then click on End Patrol

    3. Yes 24 hrs means 24 hrs, but like I said you can speed up time.

    4. See Tomacats reply.

    5. Try moving into a convoy route on the NW coast of England. Another favorite of mine is to try to intercept some of the Malta convoys which can include BB's and CV's, though getting through Gibralter can be a pain.

Good game, one of the only games that its possible to play and read a book at the same time.
    Anyway.

1.You can set waypoints at the map screen and then turn up time compression, you travel faster on the surface.

2.get the hang of the crew screen, ideally you want to be on the surface, torpedos will not get loaded if you are in silent running, make sure the torpedo rooms are fully crewed.

3.use time compression,24 hours is 24 hours,if you look at the sky at night you will actually see the stars moving, the game is full of cool details like this.

4.best bet i've found for getting away from destroyers is to keep moving, silent running obviously, your biggest friend is the termal layer, try and find this.
Never ever get caught by destroyers in shallow water.

5.Get used to the map screen, there are plenty of tools to help you plot contact reports,

    Thanks guys, salutes are out.

Another question, say if you get assigned patrol at an area near Scapa Flow, could you still go to the black pit and find ships to kill?

Another thing, is it worth it to go all the way to capetown?

Im trying to learn this game so Ill post anymore questions I might have.

It depends. Not on the stock version. If you downloaded any of the mods then possibly. I was very disapointed the first time I sailed into Dover only to find it empty.

Richard, Do you have a link to an all inclusive website for GWX3.0? Last time I tried dowloading it the directions were confusing and piecemeal. I got so screwed up I deamed it not worth the trouble.

    Try here Mike...

    Video Game Downloads

You will need to down load all seven bins & the exe.

Your need a clean SH3 and patched by the Ubi 1.4 patch unless you got a later version of the game then your be alright, check the SH3 box should say.

    1. What I always do all the time- set waypoints to your region, time compression. Rather simple. :D

    2. When you run out of torpedoes, go back to your home port (yes, you have to xD) and reload the stock!

    3. Yes it does, but remember, there is time compression :)

    4. If they are semi-aware of your presence, use silent running to either move away from them or to go deeper. If they are fully alert, dive as fast as you can!

    5. Always try and go for cargo ships early in your career (if you're starting in 1939). Later on (1940/MAYBE early 1941), with the U-boat war still quite successful, you CAN raid some enemy ports for some warships, but remember, the earlier the better- DD escorts and radar are your worst enemy. I usually just go to my point, and if I meet any merchant ship within approximately 20 kilometers, I break off my run and hunt her down. Then I just revert back to course.

A few great mods for GWX3.0 Gold

Silent Hunter 3 Commander is a must..
    http://www.users.on.net/~jscones/software/products//SH3Cmdr32.exe

Can not find the following but I do run them and able to upload them if anyone wants them. I must stress I did not create them or had any doing with them, just to be fair to the creators of these mods.

St. Nazaire mod was to late to go into the final version GWX
    http://www.ww2f.com/407789-post459.html

Torpeado Damage Final makes the hits of ships look much better...deck gun as well.

Life Boat & Debris Mod speaks for its self after you sink a ship.

Real Depth Charge & Sonar Sounds are sound mods, very good.

The mod moves the base from the wrong location back to the correct location.
