Tomcat, don't forget to get yourself patched up to 1.4 or is it 1.5 as you mention you bought the U-Boat add on. I would recommend a visit to SubSims, but I hear the site has been down most of the week, hope they are up soon as you will need mods to correct some errors like far to many Japanese planes.

I have not got the U-Boat add on as it dose not interest me on the grounds I got SH3 & GWX2.1 which allows me to see action down under and move down under in Jan44 with the 10th Flotilla.

I look forward in hearing what you think of SH4.

Once you get your feet wet with SH4, be sure to check out the two super-mods Trigger Maru Overhauled (TMO) and Real Fleet Boat (RFB). They are both excellent though I personally lean toward RFB now since it is much more historically accurate...plus I help with the research for this mod.

Also a must have it the "Run Silent, Run Deep" (RSRD) campaign mod. Just be sure to get the right flavor of RSRD...for stock game, TMO, or RFB. I provided some research material for that mod as well. Though the creator of RSRD has gone above and beyond with his latest version.

Richard...You need to pick up the U-boat Expansion for SH4. I agree with you that SH3 w/GWX is all that is needed for a u-boat sim, the expansion adds some neat enhancements to the fleet boats...and it helps support, and prove the need, for quality computer simulations. Plus, the add-on is only $10 from Direct2Drive.

Over my cold dead body will I. :p

Subsims is back up after the fire so nip over there for the mods.

I am going to wait for the GWX team to do to SH4 what they did with SH3, work is under way as I post this. I am patient person I shall wait.

Well so far the game seems pretty cool, qiute graphical too.

I havn't played SH3 so I don't mean to add things into this that are in both SH3 and 4 since I don't know any better.

Anyways, the game is good, you seem to have much more control over the ships as well as uprgades and promotions for your ship and sailors. I noticed that the Dive planes drop when diving, I thought that was pretty cool.

The sinking of ships is pretty cool too. I sunk a Japanese Cruiser with three torpedoes, one midship which let a nice hole, and the other two hitting the stern one right near the props. The ship came to a stop and she starting listing to one side, now this was the cool part. All of a sudden a massive explosion blew of the stern and the shiup sunk in few seconds, that was certainly different. I have also noticed that you can break a ships back and blow of the bow's.

There are men on the decks of the ships using machine guns and some light guns, which is pretty cool how you blow them off with the deck gun.

The only problem I have found so far, is even though you accelerate time, it still taks forever to get any where, so you take 15mins to get from HAwaii to Japan, just to run aground by accident (mainly becuase I wasn't watching) just to start all over again, that was quite frustrating.

Other then that the game seems good, hope it gets better.:)

Well yes as it's newer than SH3. :p

Are that's a cop out if your talking mods? SubSims have to different forums for the SH3 and SH4 mods. ;)

In the case of your boat you are offered them in order so no choice, no real change on upgrades and new crew. One good thing when your at sea no more moving your crew around from duty to off duty which is a plus.

Sinking time is far to fast, explosions are good. Yea you can blow ships in half but it happens a bit to much I think.

Same as SH3 but be careful if they have a deck gun or guns.

SH4 has no return to base option so you have to do it the hard way, care with the TC when planing your voyage you may hit a very small land mass.

BTW that silly under water wibble wobble or drunk vision can be done away with a simple tweak.

I havne't tried any of the mods yet, still working through the main game, I am only up to the 4th patrol. It is quite hard, although I did sink a Japanese Aircraft carrier with two torpedoes and I agree she did sink to fast, as well as every other ship in the game. I have also noticed that there are little Jpanese fishing boats and some with the name of 'Junk'.

Your men seem to have rosters throughout the day. I was in a battle with a cruiser and a destroyer and torpedoed them both but it took ages to load the torpedoes, I later found out the most of the Forward torpedo room crew were sleeping and there were only 4 men there, so I soon realised that you need to put your men on battlestations before doing anything big.

I like the missions to, so far I have done a 'drop off' mission, a photorecon of a harbour and of course the normal merchant ship patrols.
    Do they keep getting better?

I just installed the Uboat missions expansion pack and I see that it overrides the original game. I thought it was the same game but newer and differnet missions, but no everthing has changed, for the better I might add. Crew special attributes are insteretings, one of my leutenants in my Uboat career having the ability to dive and surfacr very quickly, very useful when a destroyer pops out of the blue.

So the game keeps getting better, oh as the Americans I was able to successful sail under the escort screens in the front of an enemy task force, pop up in the middle facing the mighty Japanese Battleship Yamato dead ahead and a heavy cruiser to the stern, firing all my torpedoes both for and aft, I was able to sink both ships. The Yamato took all 6 forward torps and th eHeavy cruiser took 3, a satiffactory effort I think:).

I got SH4 last month, It's a really cool game. The bad, well maybe good thing is that the only thing I can find is small fishing boats! But one time I did find a big ocean liner, I shot at it with my deck and it started to bern, so hit all the smoke stacks and they callapsed. Then it just exploded and sunk!!

All and all, I only shot it about 10 times!!

    SH4 is a really cool game. :D:D

    SH4 Add on.................

O'dear me, clunky interface even more of a pain in the ass. American voices on the German crew what a mess well thats sums up Ubi these days, fast buck fast profit. Historical a mess no question about that one.

I hear the GWX Team have now moved on to SH4 and I hope they rip the guts out of it and give us something well worth playing.

Trouble is it will be two or three years wait but if they do to SH4 in what they did to SH3 the wait will be worth it.

BTW: I have got it got it, got as a gift. Glad I shelled out nothing for it.

    Update

Well I found a German speech mod that I had to put into the game as the JSGME froze up apart from that most of the American voices are gone but some remain and that blasted American alarm system. And what is this I have been offered? A type XXI U-Boat that never saw action down under!

Alright gripe over with, the add on dose have the foundations to the makings of a good game but thats all. So its down the GWX Team to build on and fix the foundations to give us all something great in time. I know I've bashed SH4 and the U-Boat add on but I do feel it is worth buying more so now a its a bargain basement price and even if the interface is like something shot out of a cannon and there you have it just bear with it and in time we will have a great mod by the GWX Team which will at long last give us what we want, realism historical realism.
