Actually I've had numerous ideas over the years, as it seems I've been in "research mode" since I was 20. Anyway, this latest idea literally hit me out of the blue and I almost drove off the road. Here's my questions for those of you that have gone down this path. How receptive are state/local veterans agencies in working with people that would like to seek out willing veterans for interviews? I admittedly have no idea where to start, who to ask for at what agency, or even what questions I should be asking. Thanks in advance for any insight you can offer. I'm hoping to put together a grant proposal through the state of Indiana (I'm a teacher) and make this pipedream a reality.
I sent a letter to the local VFW chapter, and told them what I was interested in doing, what my intentions where, and how they could contact me if they were interested. Within a week I had set up several interviews with local veterans, ranging from stateside service to combat service in the Pacific and Europe...every branch of the service every job imaginable. I haven't finished doing my project yet but I've made several friendships that I'll cherish forever. I have a feeling you are working on the same type of thing I am. I want to put together a town history of WWII to donate to the local schools. You kind of on the same road?
That is exactly what I was thinking of when I saw that "Luke" had posted the same. I had another experience similar to his in an 'offhand" fashion. My cousin was trying to find out more about his Dad's service, and he contacted the local VFW and American Legion both of which his Dad belonged too. They went out of their way to help Lon, and gave hims leads to and stories about his Dad and their own service.
