I have observed that the Leo & M1A2 seem to have much shorter gun barrels than the Challenger. Is this true?
But from looking at the pictures here: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/2519005.stm http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/americas/2516691.stm They seem to be similar, or the Chally gun is longer. Maybe it is illusion due to the Chally turret being further forward?
Well it can't be longer as it is a L/30 cannon its mounting ! The Abrams a L/44 ! Must be an illusion, or like you said (In wich i couldnt agree more) the Chally's turret is abit further ahead on its chassis. KBO
Actually, that L30 is type of gun, not its lenght. Apparently Challenger 1 was armed with L11 gun, still type, not lenght. We can be certain its barrel was longer than 11x120mm = 132cm
I see ! I must admit I always thought that the Callenger 1's L11 gun sounded abit too short ! But hey, you'd never know unless you've sat in one. KBO
As I don't have any credible books at hand, I tried to find information about that gun from net. BAEsystems homepage was beautiful but non-informative. Finally, one page (credibility unknown) said it is 55 calibre long. http://www.rickard.karoo.net/articles/weapons_challenger2.html
why not also have some Leopard 1 pictures? so here is some: Leopard 1 (prototype): and another Leopard 1 prototype: a danish Leopard 1: Leopard 1A4 KW (prototype with a 120 mm gun): Leopard 1A6 (with a 120 mm gun and extra armor): Leopard C1 (Canadian):
