I am a part of the unwashed masses who would like to write a novel about WWII. What I would like to know from you all is what sounds you think things make.? I heard one desription that I like: the coughing of motars. Anyothers?

I heard one soldier say that the sound of incoming mortar shells sounded like passing by tepehone poles in a fast-moving car. (whoosh)

Also the 88 was said to have screamed like a banshee slightly after the initial blast of firing.

To add, most vets I've talked to say that bullets going past closeby sound like *snaps* rather than *whizzing* noises.

I heard that the Nebelwerfer sounded like a bloodcurdling scream for about 3 seconds after firing.

I believe the Wurframen 40 (more commonly known incorrectly as the Panzerwerfer) had a similar sound, seeing that it also launched rockets.

Many US vets have also said the MP-40 sounds like someone tearing a piece of cloth very rapidly.

No problem :) Theres a section on this subject in one of my books, where the US Army trainers trained their men to the sounds of weapons in combat. Alot of really interesting descriptions came up.
