It's a question that has been asked many times and dosent seem to actually have an answer: Was the Sumermarine Spitfire or the Messerschmitt Bf-109 better?

Both airplanes were the leading fighters for their respective sides and will always be remembered as the two great of the Battle of Brittain. History TV has a segment running which had asked the same question. The result was a stalemate. But can we come up with an answer?

What plane was better? The 'Spit or the '109?

Exaclty. Now this subject has been hashed over many times already In threads and other postings. Before creating a thread you might want to see if it has been discussed before. These Forums have been around for a very long time and the odds are that some certain subjects like this have already been covered a few times..

    take it easy JC

ok how about comparing late war marks of the
spitfire with late war Bf 109G-10 and K-4, add some pics instead of a long possible what-ifs with many performance charts.

for BOB both a/c were on par with each other, it's the pilot that makes the difference

The G-10 was a much better aircraft than the early Emils and if it was not flown by the rookies that had been rounded up in the late months of the war, it could be a powerful aircraft when manned by some of the Experten. As you say the pilot often made the difference, especially in 1945, but also in the b.o.b in 1940.

I agree with Skipper. The 109 was not for the amateur but in the hands of an experienced pilot, it was deadly even for its age. I believe there were pilots who did not want to switch to the new 190.

As for the Spit, also a very nice aircraft. Difficult to say which is better. Esthetically, the Spit is a beautiful plane whereas the 109 looks like it means business.

Just to mix matters up: Did you know that some early pre war Me-109s were fitted with Rolls Royce engines? :D

As is the problem with the internet. One can never gauge anothers attitude (rude, sarcastic etc.) by the tone of thier voice.

Wait a minute! I have an idea: why dont we simply discuss what aircraft you simply prefer because I guess they really were on equal terms! Personally I prefer the Spitfire, mostly the Spit X and after because they look much more deadly and their canopy was very helpful to the pilot. Anyone here prefer the 109?
