    Hello Guys,

My Dad did his advanced training at Camp Campbell before heading over to the ETO. Would you be able to tell me when his Rifle Squad may have been formed? Would it have been during training in the states or upon arrival overseas with his Armored Infantry Battalion?

    Thanks!
    James

Not an expert on this but if he shipped over with a unit I suspect the squad was formed before they went overseas. It might have been modified once they got over there especially if he went to England for any length of time before being sent over to the continent.

I suspect we'll have a more authoritative answer soon though so don't take this to the bank.

Thanks, that would make sense. His Battalion actually landed in France before moving out to fight in Germany.

There undoubtedly would have been changes to the makeup of the squad. Men would have been promoted or transferred so the group at Camp Campbell would have been different than the one that first tasted combat.

Makes sense. Also casualties played into it. I recently learned my dad was transferred to a mortar squad from a rifle squad, the last week of the war, for that very reason.

    Thanks!
