I am not an expert on computer war games, but I do enjoy them at times and I would like some info on the Steel Panthers series. I've had a difficult time learning about the game from on-line sites, because it is such a big phenomenon most articles and pages are way too specific for the 'general introduction' information I'm looking for.

First off; do I understand correctly that the only way you can get the game is via download? I guess I don't mind, if it's really that good of a game, but I'd hate to waste half a day on such a large download and then find out I didn't enjoy it.

The only ground-combat WWII game I have played much is Close Combat, and I most enjoyed the Russian Front and Battle of the Bulge versions. I am not interested much in first-person sims -- the decision of what ammo to load in the gun is not where my interest is; leave that to the subordinates. But at the same time, strategic level war games get a little more abstract than I care for.

I do not demand the greatest graphics from a game, and my computer probably wouldn't be able to run them anyway, but I guess I do prefer there being something fairly interesting on the screen to look at.

My only major frustration with the Close Combat series is that it seems rather closed-ended. For example, if I'm playing the German side, I hate it when I capture Stalingrad in one operation, then wind up defending Warsaw in the next operation. I'd prefer a more dynamic campaign, that builds on what happened last time I played.

I also like to have a good AI to play against. I have done some online gaming against 'real' opponents, but my hours are odd and for me, playing against the computer is a lot more practical.

So if you know much about Steel Panthers, and knowing what I like and dislike, do you think I'd enjoy the game? Also, any information about versions and scenarios to download would be very helpful.

    Hey,

I have the game and if you like, I will email you the manual, that way you can read it and see if you like it.

Steel Pantehrs is available free on the net now, I dont have the site anymore ,but it should be easy to find, Steel Panthers III I liked better, the scale was changed from squad to platoon level, now after playing Combat Mission, they all seem pretty primative.

I found this too. The rules seem so cryptic and complicated. I really want to start playing though.

I've been playing it for years, mostly against the AI or myself. I enjoy playing the game.

If you like Avalon Hill's Squad Leader, Panzer Leader and similar games, you'll like Steel Panthers. There are so many scenerios, that by the time you get through all them, you can start over, almost fresh.

I also play Wooden Ships and Iron Men online.
