Did the soviets use their SU assault guns like tanks or did they use more specific tactics? Feldgrau.com has a super section of Strumgeschutz tactics, and I would like to find an SU equivilent.

Just try Marcus Wendels site. He has one on the Germans and another on the Russians.

Hi, There's a good description of SU tactics in Sharp's "Soviet Order of Battle Series, Vol. 12 'Red Hammers'". Essentially he says that, unlike German StuGs, SU's were always used as self-propelled artillery and weren't designed for an assault role or as a tank substitute. Apparently, they were most often used in over-watch postions to provide flanking fire for tank and infantry outfits.
He also points out that none of them carried co-axial machine guns. I'd add that their traverse and depression were limited compared to German SP guns. This volume of his series, incidently, is dedicated to Soviet self-propelled artillery and lend-lease armor. I hope this helps. Best Regards, JP
