Talvisota means "Winter War", and is obviously about the war between Finland and Soviet Russia 1939-1940. The movie is about a group of Finnish soldiers, holding the Russians at bay from a trench.

A link to the IMDB article: Talvisota (1989)

It is a very good war movie, and I would recommend anyone to see it. However, as it is a Finnish movie, make sure to download a version that has English subtext.

Just been watching extracts on You Tube, might have to get the DVD.
If I knew where to find it.

(Mods, do want to merge this thread with the others?)

There are three versions of Talvisota.

    Original: 195 min

U.S. version: 125 min (Awful picture quality, several important scenes missing)

TV version: 250 min (Aired only on Finnish TV)

You can find the original version on DVD at eBay UK.

    Or here: http://www.suomikauppa.fi/product_info.php?language=en&products_id=609

The 4 hour miniseries is definitely the best version. Unfortunately there is no sign of a DVD release. It will be aired on Finnish TV in spring 2009.

That's also a very good movie (Tali-Ihantala 1944). I recall watching it years ago. I will have to get it again.

I also have the Fire and Ice documentary, but I have not gotten around to watch it yet. I still have a whole load of other movies & documentaries in the "to watch" list prior to that one.

Um, Tali-Ihantala 1944 premiered in Finnish theaters last December and the DVD was released last month. You probably mean some other movie?

OK. If it is that new it was definately an older Finnish movie I watched. I think it was at least three years ago.

For those who have only seen the butchered 2 hour version:

Does it feel like there's a lot of stuff missing?

The 4 hour TV version is supposed to be aired on Finnish TV during April. It's also planned to be released on DVD later this year.

One more week and the long wait is finally over.

The extended TV version of Talvisota airs on Finnish TV on April 1st - April 29th.

The extended TV version of Talvisota (265 minutes) has been released on 2 DVDs in Finland.

The miniseries doesn't have any subtitles, and the picture quality is mediocre at best. Neither are there any extras to be found.

Recently read in a newspaper that the US also made a film on Winter War (well sorta ) in 1940 but it seems that nobody cared much about it as the Winter War ended in march 1940:

    Ski Patrol (1940) - IMDb

Would be interesting to see that film though..

This one sounds like a Roger Korman special-meaning-low-budgeted.
