I was wondering if anyone can direct me to some source material on the ammunition compliment of tanks by nationality? By this I mean of the number of rounds normally carried in a given tank; how many were HE, AP, APDS or similar, HEAT, and so on. As the type of AP ammunition had a great bearing on the penetration capabilities of a given gun, I have been curious to see what the various compliments of ammunition actually was by nationality, but have found nothing thus far. Hopefully some of you might be able to help. Thanks! Greg :smok:
That is hard in some cases as the Germans would often pack is as many as would fit because they never knew when they would be resupplied.
As would anyone, but I am not looking for the exception but rather what was the normal compliment of ammunition type. This topic is quite neglected as many people say that this or that type of weapon could penetrate this or that, and quite frankly, it depends on the type of ammunition that is being used. For example: The Brit 6lber could penetrate about 74mm of armor at 1,000 yards with APCBC, and 117 with APDS. Some types like the APDS or similar may not have even been available to certain gun/tank crews at certain times. When we read certain historical acounts of this tank or gun doing this or that, the type of ammo being used becomes important as in another instance, with a different ammo, what was possible with one ammo, may not be with another. - Greg :smok:
Hey Greg, welcome back! Where have you been all this time? I'm going to sniff around and see if I can find anything on this topic for you.
Thanks Roel! Been quite busy with ancient miniature rules (AE 2nd edition), and of course work. Had a computer crash and lost a buch of web "favorites", this one included. Out of the blue, got an email of pending "PM's" here and got back on. I hope you have better luck than me on the ammo. I just thought; I will check with R. Naffzigger as he has one of the best WW2 document files I have ever known of. - Greg :smok:
