in most war movies and even combat photos you hardly ever see Germans wearing headgear just those short caps. The US and Soviet tankers wear a kinda head gear that makes me think of those old football leather helmets. Why is that. Are those caps of theirs extra thick and lined? Anyway I was just wondering since I've been watch a lot of tank movies lately.

I always thought it was about the headphones. Not sure, maybe you could put headphones to the Soviet headgear, but the Germans always seem to have the headphones on.

I kinda thought about that too as they do always show them with phones on even in the battle of the bulge it seem to show the whole crew wore head phones. So does that mean they didn't consider the crews should have head protection.

Not that I am 100% sure, but the early ww2 German tanker berets gave some protection, later on I think they considered the communication in battle between tanks more important. How was it for the British tankers?
