Just a heads-up for UK viewers - BBC have just aired a documentary called 'Tankies' and it's still available on catch-up.

It's presented by Mark Urban ( a former peacetime tank officer ) and is based on his book 'The Tank War', following the experiences of six members of 5 RTR in 7th Armoured Division - the 'Desert Rats'.

I wasn't expecting too much but its 'way better than average - the veteran interviews are extremely good. The focus is on the Desert War and Normandy ( Michael Wittmann even gets a look in ). Urban's goal when writing the book was to portray WW2 tank warfare as it really felt to men at the sharp end - I think he succeeds.

( And yes - just this once I'll forgive the BBC for slipping some Poteau/Kaiserbaracke footage into the Normandy section....but only just ! )

It looks to be a two-parts doc and I see that torrents are available so the series can be downloaded by those who are interested.
