    and while we're at it
    the frites (with mayanaise)
brussel sprouts (we just call them "sprouts")
our beers => a lot better then Heinikken, Carlsberg or Budweisser

and that's about it, unless somebody knows how to translate "witloof"

as you can read, we love to eat and drink, and export weapons

Well I can tell you why we call it that in Canada. It happened during WWI when the Canadians were at Ypres. When the Canadians were stationed there since there was very little difference between Belgium and France and the Belgians had the fries they thought they were in France or the people were French.

Ah, it takes a true European to enjoy his/her fries with mayonnaise. I love it, but over here in North America it is taboo. :(

And I say sorry to Oli and all the other Britons on this forum, as the term "chips" when used for fries is not catching on anywhere else. It is best if your country shed this ancient word from your lexicon, or replace it to mean those disgusting things Quillin is talking about (potatoe chips). It will save the world a great deal of trouble when we no longer have this confusion over our starch side dishes.

    :p

Oh yes, back to the topic. The Ak-47's relation to WWII was blah blah blah blah... (I tried)

Ypres is in Flanders, I would expect the difference with France to be obvious (namely the language).

Re: Zhukov, yes, there is a scene in Pulp Fuction where they discuss the way people eat fries in the Netherlands ("Mayonnaise! They fucking drown it in that shit!") which seems a bit odd to us Dutchmen since there isn't really any other way to eat fries. :D

Well, there are chips & fries...

Fries are the skinny little things - like at McDonalds

Chips are those that are typically cut with a 1/2 inch sqaure cross-section. All others (the nasty flat 'steak-cut' etc) are just imitators and are unworthy of mention.

Fries are fatty & crispy, and are best eaten with salt but not vinegar, as vinegar makes them soggy.

Chips are softer to eat, and are best with both salt & vinegar - lots of both!

Both are great with just about any sauce you care to mention. Personal favourites are Tomato Ketchup & HP sauce (or any brown sauce). But Salad Cream or Mayo are good - as is pretty much anything, right down to mustard or mint sauce.

People are just too elitist about what they put on food - like the silly squabbles about what sauces etc to put on hotdogs. Try a few different mixes and they stay with the one you like best.

Except chips from the chinky. They are in a class of their own and I'd never consider putting salt and vinegar on them.
Have you tried tartare sauce? Very good.... OTOH I'd never put mayo or salad cream on (and only extremely rarely tomato sauce.

Oh yes, Tartare sauce is very good!

Chips from a Chinese takeaway tend to be somewhere between chips & fries - thin but soft (well, pulpy), and very geasy. I find that lots of salt is needed simply to soak up the grease! ;)

NO! Tartare sauce is for white fish ONLY! It is heresy to put it on chips! I worked in a fish and chips shop for 3 years, trust me! ;)

Great, a topic I know something about! :D

The best thing for chips from the Chinese takeaway is Chinese barbeque sauce....glutinous, yummy red stuff, I had huge cravings for it when I was pregnant.

Home cooked chips are best....double fried, once to blanch them and actually cook them, you take them out, wack up the heat and then get them all brown and crispy....Maris Piper potatoes are best. Drown them in vinegar and a little bit of salt.

    Fries I have with mayonaise.....mmmmmmmmm!

I don't put it on fish - just the chips (and only chips in restaurants).
I suppose you'll tell me that you're not supposed to put cheese and onion crisps in blackcurrant jam sandwiches next.... :D Yum!

For those of you who like potato chips (the round, crunchy, flat things mentioned above), try dipping them in ranch dressing. It's good! I haven't thought about doing that with french fries, though...
