Has anyone else noticed the flag icons? Whenever one makes a posting he or she has a choice of icons.....They start off with thumbs up, new idea, smiles in different degrees, eventually ending up with I asume flag icons. On the 4th row is a spinning smiling face followed by a black cross then a grey one..... Next comes the flags starting with Italy or Ireland, then the Japanesse Naval War flag, Communist China, the British Union Jack, France, Belgium, Holand or Luxembourg, Spain,Communist Russia,USA, Confederacy, Mexico, Brazil, Sweden, Argintina, and finally Chile.....then an airplane then a drug spinning whatever. My question....why do we have the last row of flags in regard to WW2..I'm not being nasty here, or ugly, I am honestly curious. I can see a reason for everything else, but that last row is something else. Again, were these icon just easy to apply? Perhpas they do not apply to WW2 and someone may want to rethink these selections. I really do not care one way or the other, but I do wish there was a TEXAS flag just so I could make Jumbo, redcoat, and JJ smile.
Back at the start of August, Peppy was looking to upgrade the flag section. As i have been away, i don't know how its coming on, but i assume he is working on it. If you want a certain flag, send him it and i'm sure he will try to add it. Same goes with the AVATARS.
I would imagine the two of them....Otto/Peppy are working like mad to get things updated and will hopefully include other avatars and of course icons for our posts..... ship, artillery, , etc ? do believe the flags were to use for anyone whether it was WW 2 related, free fire zone or the country they were or raised in. Thanks gentlemen ! Yes the Wilde Sau or wild boar image for JG's 300, 301 and 302. though mostly associated with JG 300. Later a white background with boar head was used by NJGr 10 since many of the transferred personell were from the JG 300 single seat night fighter unit. Developed in July 1943 from Hajo Hermann and his friends who were all bomber pilots. The raid to Hamburg had totally disrupted the radar systems in the Reich thus the only thing to counter the heavy 4 engine RAF raids were un radared a/c. These Fw 190's and Bf 109's were used all through 1943 and into the spring of 1944 before the three units were then used for day light defence against the US bombers. I have been waiting a while to put this up or another one in my mind, since it typlifies the book and research we are doing on the anti-mosquito a/c and pilots that part of JG 300 was used for. Alles gut E
Nice! Kinda even puts Bart Simpson and Eric Cartman to shame... well, at least Bart... So these guys flew at night, without radar, against the RAF bombers? Wow... I don't want to hi-jack a thread, but since I essentially still know diddly-squat about the air war, I'd love to hear more about this. Any previous threads? Gary--im still looking for a nice image online of a Reichekriegsflagge, so I can let Peppy know to make it a flag icon--if you know where a good image is--please let me know. Great avatar Erich--i'll miss the onld one--PS, wheres your Black Wound Badge?
Guys, yes the Kriegsmarine battle flag would be very cool indeed ! good idea Carl.... I've got the FAGr 5 emblem on hold and even two others in my files I have wondered about. The black wound badge is out for the moment till I hurt myself again......which.....well, ah November is around the corner when I start my tree work in a big way again. I may have to add it again later..... Crazy, the wilde sau units had radar on the Fw 190's in the late winter of 44 from February through late March on an experimental basis and not all Fw 190's of the staffeln were equipped. In most cases the pilots depended on ground control and the use of searchlights and when the a/c flew Helle-nacht missions the searchlights were the main source of ground to air control. They would light up the lead and rear RAF bombers and searchlights would be set up in patterns and in most of these latter cases the German fighters could follow the literal paths of the searchlights as they were switched on. What was seen in the air was a road of lights showing the path of the bomber stream. Becuase of the problems landing the single engine fighter at night and the low endurance rate even with a single drop tank, the fighters were removed from the night skies and used for daylight work. Only the 10./JG 300 was singled out in August 1944 with the expereinced pilots flying the fast Bf 109G-6/AS to chase Mossie bombers while over Berlin's airspace from August to late November 44. This oversized staffeln then was the basis for the Bf 109 equipped NJG 11 and then a new 10./JG 300 came into being in December of 44 to fly day ops. All this in our book...... E
I would like to have more flags over here. I love this forum anyway. Nice avatar, Erich! And I think should be getting a silver wound badge. What if a German boy who lives in Mexico pushes him downstairs?
I've made a modern German flag as a test icon and I've been experimenting with a sub icon and an artillery icon similar to the plane icon we have already. But it's rather difficult because they are really VERY small.
Mott, no offence taken at all, but I'm glad you wrote you weren't being rude just to be on the safe side. Sometimes when we write some down like this, what we mean is sometimes portrayed a little harsher than is intended, and I know you didn't intend to be rude. Truthfully I appreciate your questions here, I'd always meant to rectify this 'posting icon situation', and your post was the motivation I needed to get it done. First off, answers: The reason I had all those other nations included is because at one time, I had a member who was going to run one of those global warfare games where each player represents a different country. The flags were meant to be used by each of the players when they posted something to do with their country. There were actually supposed to be many more, but the game never materialised, the game Forum was removed, but the icons stayed. Ultimately, I'm going to have to make some changes. I'm going to add a ship icon, a tank icon, infantry, maybe even a sub or bomber as well. Some of the flags will be removed, but the ones of the major players will stay. I'm also toying with the idea of making them a little bigger. I mean it's hard to fit a national flag into a space that small! I'd also like to make the flag icons actually flag shaped, to minimise the editing down of images, with the accompanying loss of quality and perspective. More on this as it develops...
