    So . . . did the mafia have a hand in either side during WWII? Are there any books on the subject -- books the quality of, say, "Shattered Sword"? Thank you.

    I remember reading somewhere that quite a few high ranking mobsters were officers in the 82nd AB. But I can't for the hell of it remember where it was...so maybe we should better take it with a pinch of salt!

    Look this up http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lucky_Luciano. As the story doesn' look very "politically correct" it's not talked about much and I dont know any good sources and there is a lot of mith in Italy around it with the right claiming Mussolini had broken the back of the mafia and the allies allowed it back into power. AFAIK there were some US investigatiions post-war.
