Interesting website - the guy's a real enthusiast !

The truth about Hemingway's WWII 'exploits' will now never be known. Not only did he embroider his experiences but so many tall tales were told by anyone who met him, and many who didn't !

I think what is often forgotten is that he was known for having such a wild creative writing skill ;-)) That story might reflect those skills ;-))

It is pretty well accepted that the man was not only a "great story teller", he was an inveterate liar when it came to his own exploits as they really happened. He always "caught the biggest fish" (not), he always bedded the most beautiful women (sometimes), he always drank the most liquor (occasionally), he never admitted to coming in second to anybody in any circumstance (more often than not he did).

He was a great novelist because he had a great imagination, and a way with words.

The chapter about Hemingway's WWII adventures in Carlos Baker's biography makes for great reading, but sadly it seems that Baker swallowed a whole load of Hemingway myths hook, line and sinker.

heh heh, Hemingway is mentioned in one or two vols of my alltime most favorite WWII Fictional series called: The Sergeant-by: Gordon David who really is E. Howard Hunt. Anyway, the lead character-Master Sergeant C.Joe Mahoney-meets up with him in Paris after it was liberated and they go the rounds by drinking and frolicing together. Great fiction those books are. Anyway, Hemingway has a few "adventures" in those books as well.

When the war first broke out, Hemmingway decided that he would go "U-boat hunting" while he was in Cuba. So he commandeered a cannon, mounted it on the deck of his fishing yacht, and got the US government to pay his gas bill while he went fishing.

He only finagled a trip to the European theater when his wife (or girlfiend) of the moment got a press pass and was in Britain reporting on the war. He couldn't stand to be "up-staged" by a girl after all in the macho world could he? I wouldn't doubt he traded a cuban cigar for the Gott Mit Uns belt buckel in reality, he had them shipped to him all through the time he was "overseas".
