In my opinion the t-90 is the best tank in the world.
    My school mate disagrees.
He says the t-80 is the same but faster.
What do you think is the best tank in the world and what are the differences between the t-80 and t-90?

T-80 is built on T-80 hull, T-90 is built on T-72 hull. Both aren't propably the best tanks in the world, but maybe best tanks in Russian conditions.

Because it has more powerful and more thirstier gas turbine engine, which isn't very suitable for tank engine. The T-90 multifuel engine is better IMHO.

Hence the development of the T-80UD (D = diesel).
T-90 is called T-90 for "marketing" reasons, should be T-72M??, it's only an upgrade.
The bad news is that, especially in Russia, T-80 has a lousy reputation due to combat losses in Chechnya - which isn't really valid, ANY tank operating in those conditions will suffer - how many MBTs can stand up to multiple (7 in some cases) RPG hits from a first (second for Americans)-floor window onto the engine deck.
T-72 didn't suufer anywhere near as many losses, mainly because so few were deployed there.
T-80 was the first MBT to be displayed with an active defence system (Arena - currently iunder consideration by the French!!)
