I've been anxious for Battlefront's Theatre of War Kursk to come out. It is one step closer today as it is now in the pre-order stage. I have the Theatre of War II (Africa) and so far I've been enjoying this. It has the attention of realism of Close Combat plus the advantage of being in a real time format with really nice graphics. If you might be considering Theatre of War Kursk give the Theatre of War II (Africa) demo a try and see what you think. As far as pre-ordering is considered the main advantage is the offer of having the CD copy and electronic download for the price of a single product; plus there will only be a printing of the game manual for the pre-release. I find I like a paperback manual over the electronic because it can be read anywhere. I will attach the link to their website. Battlefront.com - Kursk 1943
The demo worked great for me. This game appears to be awesome! The battle generator alone will give amazing replay value for a great theater of war. I am sorry to hear this hasn't worked well on your computer because I would have to believe you'd like the game. I'm not sure what would have caused your crashes. To compare out systems; I am running 64 bit Windows 7. I have dual ATI 5850 cards. I have a Core I7 950 CPU. I have tried this on stock settings. The only difference is that I have modified the resolution to 1920 by 1080 with 60mhz. Do you have your resolution configured to your monitor's native resolution? I've had times when this does crazy things to games. Best of luck; I'm hoping that there will be more people from this forum who will be getting into this game. The only detraction that I've noticed so far is that I can't figure out how to keep my infantry prone while giving an attack order. I would have to believe this would be possible.
There is a 3rd mission which shows up called "New Mission" I think this pops up when you access the Mission Generator. I think this was not even meant to pop up the "New Mission". Anyways; I can get into this, set up the Order of Battle but when I click the button to get into the game I crash to the desktop every time. Can you play the German and Russian missions?
The cause of my crash ended up being that I used lend lease vehicles in the Order of Battle. So this was a bug. Once I chose Russian made transport vehicles this problem went away. This issue I had was only in the Mission Generator; the production team knows of this issue so hopefully the game ships without this bug. I have played the demo several times and have found it to play out quite well. I've discovered that you can not just drag a glob of units and march them across the map even if they aren't infantry. Once units such as the Wespe, Hummel, and the Mortars are used in their proper role it really is awesome. The minefields are killer, (just as in the real battle of Kursk) but even these can be minimised with the proper strategy. I've talked with Joe and Matt who own Theatre of War 1. I do not own this game, but it sounds like it had issues that prevented the feeling of immersion in the game. I just read a preview posted on the TOW2-K website which speaks of big improvements since TOW1. Theatre of War 2: Kursk 1943 – PC Game Preview » Armchair General Try the demo; if you like it you can save $10 by pre-ordering the game. With the addition of an easy to use Mission Generator I see very good replayability; and many tactical chess matches between online opponents.
Any word on the exact release date? Demo's are always going to be buggy too, since they're just a DEMO, not the finished, polished product.
It should be between February 24th and March 10th. It has been posted on Battlefront that by law it must be released 4 to 6 weeks after pre-order.
TOW Kursk released late last night. I haven't had much opportunity to play yet but the maps look quite interesting. This is the time of year when there are many game offerings to choose from. Kharkov 1943 looks to be an interesting game in a somewhat similar genre. Perhaps someone in that has both games could shed some light on how the 2 games compare. When I was growing up I owned a board game called Panzerblitz which really captured my imagination. I would not in my wildest dreams believe how games have advanced since that point in time. Finally there is a game which has a somewhat similar feel to Panzerblitz albeit in a much more realistic environment.
