I was musing on the delights of a well known American Halloween sweet when i was rudely brought back down to earth with an outlandish claim.

I of course refer to the delactable known to one and all worldwide as Candy Corn. Its immediately recoqnised as exactly what it is , its as American as apple pie and maybe more so.
Ive never seen Candy corn outside of the US so its got rights to the claim.
    Or so i thought . .

There is only one Candy Corn worthy of mention and thats Brachs.Id foolishly purchased another brand and it did go in the bin , theres no comparison.
As i waxed lyrical on its many virtues i was told its actually made in Mexico.
Im both shocked and perplexed , how can this be ? I done a spot of googling and Brachs were in Illinois but links show it was long abandoned and in fact they blew the factory up in the making of one of the Batman movies.

All of this of course seems to indicate there may be some basis to the idea , i asked does it say that right on the bag and im told it does.
My problem is the Candy corn all got put in a glass pumpkin container and the packaging thrown away.
I thought if i post this in time somebody might still have a packet and can put me straight on this.

No harm to Mexico , i like Mexico and its culture , been there a few times. But such an American icon ...can it be true?

Have they outsourced the Candy corn too ?

no need to outsource candy corn, Brachs made all that has ever been made. It doesn't ever get eaten at large enough measure to require making any more. Not like Twinkies which have a shelf-life of less than a month, all the Candy Corn ever made still exists unless consumed.

This quantity of consumption will not require making new Candy Corn for the foreseeable future. (just yanking yer chain) I don't know or really care where that vile collection of sugar and food coloring is produced.

And I saw Candy Corn in a sweet shop in Wentforth Falls, Queensland. Of course, I saw other types of Candy I'd not seen since I was about 5 and some I'd never seen before.

    You found me out! Ah well, about four years ago it was pointed out that;

"Chicago has historically been one of the biggest locales for the production of candy in the country. Brach's had their factory here, as did Ferrara Pan, Fannie May, and of course the local Frango mints sold at Marshall Field's (yum!) were made here too. One of the more delightful and tempting things about Chicago is walking downtown in the late afternoon and having the scent of chocolate waft over you.

"This is changing. Frangos are now made elsewhere, Brach's and Ferrara Pan have closed their factories and moved production to Mexico, and within the past month the new owner of the Fannie May factory has closed its doors. The scent of chocolate will still waft, though, because we have a couple of smaller chocolatiers that are still here. For now."

"Walter Williams does a beautiful job in this
Town Hall column of connecting this shift to the sugar lobby and the subsidies paid to domestic sugar producers."

"Chicago has been home to many of America's candy manufacturers, but today they've fallen on hard times. In 1970, employment by Chicago's candy manufacturers totaled 15,000, and now it's 8,000 and falling. Brach used to employ about 2,300 people; now most of its jobs are in Mexico. Ferrara Pan Candy has also moved much of its production to Mexico. Yes, wages are lower in Mexico, but wages aren't the only factor in candy manufacturers' flight from America. After all, Life Savers, which for 90 years manufactured in America, has moved to Canada, where wages are comparable to ours."
