Battle of the Bulge Movie. Epic story of the Nazi war machine's last desperate offensive. Henry Fonda, Robert Shaw, and Charles Bronson star. (1965) TV PG History channel
Thanks for the "heads up." I was about to make a similar posting because I saw the advertisement for it just before I left to come here. It is sad though--that this movie has not yet been released on DVD.
Hi OTF, I think it was made in 1965. I know it was made at least a few years before Charles Bronson was cast in The Great Escape. Also--it is called Battle of the Bulge. I was more than irritated with the history channle though. They ran a heavily edited version of the movie. Also their choice of historian/guests could not have been worse. For instance--the older of the two historians got too many facts SNAFUed. He said that Joachim Pieper was at Malmedy and gave the order to shoot the American POWs there. Pieper was nowhere near Malmedy and never gave the order to shoot those G.I.s Based on talking with German Waffen SS and also American vets who fought there--their conclusions are almost the same. What both side now feel is that the SS who were at Malmedy and did the executions--were also veterans who had spent much time on the Eastern Front fighting a more brutal war. Its apparent that some of them were over zealous and committed that atrocity. Another sad mistake coming from this history professors lips was that there was no 350 G.I. POWS executed--more like about half that number total. He also went on to gripe about the people who made the movie---that they did not show African/American soldiers who were also at The Bulge. Yes there were some "Buffalo Soldiers" at the Bulge but, they were either ones who drove trucks for The Redball Express, or were supply stevadores and maybe some MPs. Apparently what this history professor seemed not to realize was that this movie was not meant to be based solely on face--meaning that all they wanted was to present the essence of the whole battle by taking liberties--which they had to. I know I will take heat for saying this next bit but--these leftise liberal professors really need to quit presenting history with their kind of spin and present it the way it actually happened. That younger professor irritated me as well with his stupid comments. The only main comments that I heard from either of them that are true was the fact that there were over 600,000 German, 500,000 American and 55,000 British Soldiers who took part in this magnificant battle. The other truely true statement that they made was that the battle from start to finish did last about 45 days.
