    Hi

    Welcome to the forum.

The photograph you refer to is, as far as I recall, a colourised black-and-white photograph, so it's difficult to determite exactly, but it looks like an HE impact mark (which is typically characterised by a large number of thin lines radiating from the point of impact).

I wasn`t specific enough on my first post, my apologies.

Yes, HE impact it must be, but could it be projectile fired from SU-152 or ISU-152, or would any smaller diameter projectile make such a large diameter mark on that plate, especially when it is HE impact? Does anyone has more spesific info about that picture, time when it was taken etc.?

In my mind, I am comparing this to pictures I saw from damaged Ferdinand

If it was a an HE shell (as seems likely) then it is probably safe to assume that the machine gun (barrel at least) is a replacement.

It's the Tiger with the dent to the left of the machine gun port.

    Dented Tiger

I see what you mean. Surely, though, any suitable largeish calibre anti tank shell could make a dent like that and not necessarily effect penetration ? There didn't seem to be any immediate peripheral damage to any other part of the tank, though, so maybe the shell did not shatter ?
