Tracing my grandfather's wartime operations

    My grandfather served his time as a chief petty officer in the merchant navy throughout the war and before he died I was too young to appreciate the stories he told me which I sincerely regret now, so would like to gather as much information as possible from what's out there but I have no idea where to begin.

    Any information on where to start would be greatly appreciated.
