Hi looking for any fotos of airbases and seaplane bases on the truk islands please. can anyone help ?
Here is a site you may find interesting if you have not already found it. War in the Pacific NHP: War in Paradise 31. Seaplane base The construction of the seaplane base began pre-war in about 1935 and took about four years to build by which time the Japanese Navy were back in control of Micronesia. Chuukese from many islands were forced into building the base. The two ramps that were used to retrieve the seaplanes can be seen either side of the dock and bunker, which has a school office perched on top of it. The seaplane base is now the location of the Tonoas high school.
I might be able to get some high-resolution photos at some point on the weekend. Are you still interested?
FWIW go to the Combined Arms Research Library advanced search page Combined Arms Research Library Digital Library : Advanced Search In the block for exact phrase type in “Field Survey of Japanese Defenses” Clear all the selected categories and then click the box for WWII Operational Documents. Click Search And you should come up with said survey for Truk. Aviation stuff is just a piece, and shows up on page 144 of 160. Regards

IPMS-member is busy painting first 5001/72 Plastic Soldiers to populate the Island. Wargamer busy casting Sea-wall and Palm-Log Bunkers in resin. Ordered 1st 250 Palm trees etc. I am about to enter the site with info you sent - will give you feedback later today REALLY WELL APPRECIATIVE FOR THE RESPONSE HERMAN
This could help some; Yap Related Pictures from the National Archives. Located via the Micronesian Seminar #1 Look forward to seeing the model, sounds awesome.
Hi SpartanRoller, have not been on the WWII Forum site for more than a month. I chose a Theme where unfortunately most of the models have been discontinued Have been on a FIRE-BUY at Local Shops and on the Net @ E-BAY ,China - Poland for Models for the Diorama. Joined Local IPMS Chapter , Wargaming Club , Miniatures Guild, Wood-turning Association all to get Ideas for the Diorama and help build the set. Thanks for the info really well appreciated, Had a look at the fotos were very helpful, Regards Herman [ japsubshunter at yahoo.com ]
Good luck with your project! How many planes are you planning on having in the massive diorama? 6m x 6m in 1/72 scale is going to be huge. Hope you have a place to put it.
Approximately 30-40 planes including some SeaPlanes, Will include quite a number of ''Captured'' planes as well Truk being the Transit Hub for the Japs I feel that having a few ''representative'' Aircraft from different Units [ In for Repairs] will be acceptable. The Eten Island Airfield will be the Simpliest to represent, Dublon Island is just to Complex. Have bought all the Aircraft I will need initially, am now busy with the Vehicles,Figures [ will use jap Infantry and modify some to do Airfield chores ] Also the Bunkers,Artillery,Jettys,Palm trees, This is going to be a long haul, Will collect everything first before I start. Thanks Herman [ klimeid@telkomsa.net ]
Hi Drogon, I do humbly apologise in not having reponsed to you on an earlier date, But I have been so busy on E-Bay and with Model Suppliers trying to get the Kits I need, that I have neglected the Forum, been having days [sometimes 2in a row] of no sleep-staying up to get the auctions, Did not realise what I got myself into - but the first phase [ getting the kits needed ] is almost over. The fotos are absolutely amazing KUDUS TO YOU. With the references it has been basically a minefield sometimes coming across info by accident. I have come into this a bit late. Have decided to start with the ETEN AIRFILED 1st. Realised I am going to have to do this project in stages. Thanks again.
Well Leonard ALL I CAN SAY IS WOW ! Now that is a real welcome site, This has been like XMAS COMING EARLY. I have been all over the net looking for some info to this nature but had become frustrated. I dowloaded the 2 PDF Folders, had a quick browse But will have to print it into book form as it is going to require some serious reading, You really hit the motherload with this one - The quick browse already had me back to E-Bay to look for more Artillery to populate the numerous gun emplacements. THANKS AGAIN HERMAN.
Biak thank you very much for the color fotos, they are really going to help with the construction of the gun-emplacements also the Caves ALL THIS EFFORT IS WELL APPRECIATED. It has been so intense that at some stage I had forgotten which models are coming in - have stopped buying for now spent $1000 PLUS in last month in Exchange RATES THAT IS EXTREME FOR ME. Actually blew my budget - have to now save up for the paints - at least 80% of kits , figures Buildings are paid for and on the way. To think this all started with the buying of the GATO-SUB. 2MONTHS AGO. Thanks again. Even bought some white metal 25mm Hammerhead sharks for the Sea-Scenes. The Sub scene will now happen last - It will have to have it's own table. I MUST APOLOGISE TO YOU AS WELL BOUT THE LATE RESPONSE IT WAS NOT DONE INTENTIONALLY. Regards Herman

Cut the wood for the Jettys as well.
