    Hi.

    Regardind designations the japanese armed forces were very special.

    Until the mid 1930th all mortars used by infantry units were designated "curved-fire infantry gun". After 1935 the designation was changed to "grenade launcher".
    The 37 mm infantry guns after the "Sogekiho" were designated "flat-fire infantry guns". Later these guns and the AT-guns were (re-)designated "mobile rapid-fire guns"
    "Mortars" were exclusively used by artillery units, especially trench artillery units.

    It´s the same with armor:
    Only tank units used "tanks". All other units used "armored vehicles". Navy amphibious tanks were designated "special motor launch".

    SPG:
    Tank units used "gun tanks" for fire support vehicles, infantry had "weapon carriers"

    and so on....
