Came across this little thing, the APS, an underwater assualt rifle for the Russian Navy.

It fires 5.56mm "needles" in both single-shot and full-auto. Here's the actual website I found it on:

What ever happened to just using grenades to fish with? This would be most unfair and presaumable fairly innacurate.

It is only inaccurate when the gun is fired out of water, but underwater accuracy and range is affected by depth. The Russian Navy claims the APS has more range and power than a speargun and that drysuits and some helmets don't stand a chance

The Russians also produced a four barreled underwater pistol during the '60s.
It fires a 4.5mm needle which is also more powerful than a speargun.

never having fired a spear gun I would have imagined that they wiggle and swerve within the water due to any currents and swells so would be inaccuate after 5 to 10 meters

    Anyone any experience?

This really isn't that new of an idea. We have had the technology for underwater weaponry for a long time. We do have the technology to fill liquid fuel inside of bullets without cases, making them able to fire in an environment where fire traditionaly cannot exist.

Interesting, is this used for any tactical reasons today?

    underwater dart guns

i have seen reports that the US seals have weapons that also will work underwater. also dart type ammo, ranges out to 50 yds have been claimed with fair accuracy. i saw a picture of one that also was a 4 shot pistol with 4 barrels.

The APS fires at an incredible 1200 f.p.s up to a range of 30-98 ft depending of the depth at which it is fired.

The SPP-1 fires at about 800 f.p.s. with a range up to 50 ft.

These are incredible speeds for a weapon fired underwater. I read the guns were used quite effectively during its trials. It was then approved and was used by the Spetznaz, and possibly still the Russian Navy of today.

I heard Glock made a pistol that could also fire underwater.
