Here´s a photo with some info. Wonder if the pilot can be identified?

Isn't the date 9 -10 40 ? Gochsen is in Baden Wurtenberg, so it's a bit weired to have a Canadian officer shot down there right in the middle of the BOB (no fighter losses in Germany that date, need to check Bomber Command) . I wonder whether this could be a 1939 phoney war casualty . I 'll try for October 1939.

Nothing for those dates either Kai. I will check for 4-40 now.

I think Gochsch might be the photographers name rather than a shortened version of Gochsen...

I only see 9-40, so this might have been taken anywhere along the coast of France or the low countries during the Battle of Britain. 22 Canadian pilots died in the battle so the records might lead you to one who died in September over the coast of Europe (rather than over England, the Channel, the north Sea, etc).

This contains a list of Canadian pilots during the BoB. The ones who died are indicated by a single *

I downloaded the picture and played with the contrast. I'm 99% sure the word is just Gochsch (which is a German surname) and the date is 9-40. Gochsch could be a place name as well, but considering the date I'd guess it's probably just the photographers name.

Thanks Kodiak I will check again and check both Fighter command and Bomber Command losses in France , Belgium and Holland for the mid September area and see if any of those 22 men you mention would fit. I have a feeling he is a fighter pilot, but let's not neglect he could have been part of a bomber crew which would make the list much bigger.

Kai , in the meantime you could check the data base provided by Kodiak (http://www.amazon.com/Kodiak-Bear-Ma.../dp/B006Z1FHTC ) and look up for the 22 pilots , those with a (*) and cross the data you obtain with the
    www.CWGC.org
listings. By doing so you will get a certain number of crash places and dates and would get the 22 number considerably lower. Enjoy .
