Hi everybody, Just want to let everyone know that there will be an Erwin Rommel documentary airing on Dec 23, Dec 24, Dec 25 on History International at 7pm on those days. Rommel the warrior, the conspirator, the doubter. I unfortunately don't have History International because I am in Canada, and that channel is not available in Canada. This is one of the reasons I wish I was American.. the variety of channels! But anyway gents enjoy it... Please let me know how it was Reading bout Rommel, watching docs on WW2 plus surfing this forum seems to be the only thing thats cheering me up a bit with these holiday blues .. Don't know why I feel so sad. But this is bumming me out even more. Anyway, thought I'd send a heads up to all you Rommel fans out there with History International channel. suzie
Suzie, thanks for the heads up about the Rommel show. I'm not sure if we get History International, but I'll check into it. Sorry to hear you're feeling blue. When I feel a bit low, I try to keep this thought in mind from Abraham Lincloln: "Most people are about as happy as they make up their minds to be." - Abraham Lincoln
The History channel? Arg, it will probably be sensationalist! We used to get the History Channel here, still do I think but its been a while since I've watched anything on it, the last thing was probably a documentary on Hitler and the Occult!
Thanks lou for your support.. I'm trying to feel better... it's hard somtimes to move foward especially this time of year when there is so much going on.. that is a good quote by Lincoln, very true. BTW, Sorry for spilling out my stuff out to you guys.. it's not your problem. anyway, moving on Mehar, where ls that quote from about Rommel and the occult? And what's that all about? lol
Ahh no no it isn't real (I hope!), it was a "plot" I essentially made up to show how the History Channel tends to sensationalism some stuff.
After Christmas I will look on some sites i regularly visit to see if someone has uploaded to megavideo or another streaming site the documentary for you Sunny, and for anyone else who misses it.
Thanks for the heads up Suzie. Nice to know us Americans are loved for something, even if it is all the channels on our remotes.
I missed the first part, but watched the second part "Rommel: The Doubter." This part focused on the decline of Afrika Korps and Rommel's defeat at El Alamein. It struck me as being modeled on the 1974 documentary The World at War for its interviews of actual participants, mostly staff personnel and both British and German veterans. One interesting segment involved a former German nurse who examined Rommel, and refused to agree with a diagnoses of diphtheria, so Rommel could go home after the Battle of Mersa Matruh. She later agreed that Rommel had a bad case of sun stroke. Unlike The World at War, the British privy to ULTRA was mentioned. Only in the last few minutes does the documentary argue that Rommel began to lose faith in Hitler when the Fuhrer ordered Rommel not to retreat from El Alamein (an order Rommel disobeyed, but 24 hours too late). The documentary is pretty straight forward with archival film footage and present day interviews, and no computer generated graphics. Greg C.
Ahh man, i wished I could have seen it. Why can't rommel come to canada? hehe Instead i see a documentary about penguins... let me know what part 3 is about.. Suzie
can you give me a website where i can go to to check it out... I checked history international site.. nothing shows up
I have been watching it, but it has been (as mentioned) mostly a re-editing of sections of the World at War documentary. I have the 11 disk collectors set, and recognized all the sections. Including the one with his nurse who didn't agree with the diptheria diagnosis. She made quite a point of that being a childhood illness, but of course that doesn't mean it is impossible for him to have contracted it. Childhood diseases can lay an adult quite low if contracted after their teen-age years. So, Rommel might have had diptheria, but it is also not out of the realm of possibiltiy that he did have a nasty case of sun-poisoning either. That can be a nasty condition as well.
Suzie, this kind of stuff usually pops up on youtube. I watched all of Patton and Enterprise 360 on there. Just keep checking.
Part 3, Rommel: The Conspirator, starts with the Afrika Korps defeat in Tunisia, to Rommel's forced suicide in October 1944. Again filmed interviews with intimates coupled with archival film footage make up the documentary. Rommel's son Manfred gets a lot of space. Unlike past theories that Rommel's family had no clue Rommel's life was in danger after the failed July 20 plot against Hitler, Manfred recalls several conversations with his father stating this. Manfred knew his father was getting in that car for the last time. The documentary emphasized a few times that until the bitter end, "Rommel could not tear himself away from Hitler." Rommel is quoted at the end, "I loved Hitler and I still do." I would argue that it was not Hitler Rommel was so loyal to, but his sense of duty as a soldier to his supreme commander. It is like we Americans who say "your country right or wrong!" Rommel was torn between duty and what was right for the German people. It is clear Rommel would have negotiated peace with the western Allies had the July 20 plot worked. Rommel was also unable to speak his true feelings for fear of the safty of his family. Modern views of Rommel's home in Herrlingen, Germany, and his former headquarters at La Chateau Roche-Guyon add to this documentary. Greg C.
