Depends on you define 'first loss'. Sniper1946's reply notes the first loss "in the line of duty". The 31st Fighter Group had three losses on 8/19/42, which were probably the first USAAF losses on combat missions in the ETO. The three pilots were Robert Wright, Lewis Wells and William Dabney. The first heavy bomber losses were a B-17 of the 92nd BG on September 6, 1942 with all aboard KIA, and one from the 97th BG on the same day with 1 KIA.

Upon further review - two of the borrowed RAF A-20 Boston's flown by USAAF crews on July 4, 1942 on the first USAAF ETO mission were lost to ground fire. There were 7 KIA between the two aircraft.

As Americans fought (and died) in the Battle of Britain, presumably you are looking for actual USAAF personnel?
